Trump Reiterates Claim That India, Pakistan ‘Made Peace’ After His Trade Threat
New York: US President Donald Trump has once again claimed that India and Pakistan “made peace” in May after he warned both nations that he would suspend trade deals if they continued their military conflict — a statement he has repeated several times since then.
Speaking at the America Business Forum in Miami on Wednesday, Trump said, “In eight months, I ended eight wars, including Kosovo and Serbia, Congo and Rwanda… Pakistan and India.”
Recounting the events, he said, “I was in the middle of trade negotiations with both India and Pakistan when I read that they were going to war. Seven planes were shot down, and the eighth was badly damaged. I told them, ‘I’m not making any trade deals unless you make peace.’”
According to Trump, his ultimatum quickly produced results. “A day later, I got a call saying, ‘We made peace.’ They stopped. I said, ‘Thank you. Let’s do trade.’ Isn’t that great? Tariffs did that. Without tariffs, that would never have happened,” he said, drawing applause from the audience.
Since May 10 — when Trump announced on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire” after “a long night of talks mediated by Washington” — he has repeated his claim over 60 times that he “helped settle” the conflict between the two neighbours.
India, however, has consistently rejected any suggestion of third-party mediation.
On May 7, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 civilians. Both nations reached an understanding on May 10 to cease hostilities after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile exchanges.
In his Miami speech, Trump further claimed that he also played a role in resolving conflicts involving Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, and Cambodia and Thailand.
“Some of those wars had been going on for over three decades. I got some of them settled in an hour — with no help from the United Nations,” he said.
Trump added that the US is promoting global peace “through strength,” declaring, “Nobody’s going to mess around with us.”
He also spoke about recent trade deals with China, Japan, and Malaysia, describing them as “great economic deals, beneficial for everyone.”
