Trump Says He Would “Love” a Third Term, Though Constitutionally Barred

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has hinted he would “love” to seek a third term in office, though he remains constitutionally limited to two, BBC reported.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while traveling from Malaysia to Japan, Trump dismissed suggestions from supporters that he could run as vice-president in 2028 — a potential loophole involving the president-elect’s resignation — calling the idea “too cute” and saying it “wouldn’t be right.”

Trump admitted he hadn’t “really thought about” a third run but claimed his current poll numbers were “the best” he’d ever seen. He also praised Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as possible successors, calling them “unstoppable.”

Speculation about Trump’s political future intensified in April when his official campaign store began selling a “Trump 2028” hat for $50. His former adviser Steve Bannon recently added fuel to the rumors, telling The Economist there was a “plan” to help Trump return to the presidency in 2028, though he did not elaborate.

Under the 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution, presidents are restricted to two terms. Amending this rule would require approval from two-thirds of both the House and Senate or two-thirds of state legislatures, followed by ratification by 38 states — a process widely seen as improbable.
