Jammu: A local court on Saturday awarded rigorous life imprisonment to two men for the murder of an on-duty policeman in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir eight years ago.

Principal District and Sessions Judge convicted Mohd Maqbool Dar of Kupwara and Riaz Ahmad of Bandipora for deliberately running over Selection Grade Constable Sanjeev Kumar on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway near Jakheni in January 2017, resulting in his instant death, a police spokesperson said.

The court also imposed a fine of ₹10,000 each on the convicts.

According to the police, on January 14, 2017, Dar, who was driving a truck owned by Ahmad, was stopped by personnel around 10:45 pm as traffic towards Srinagar was restricted. Instead of complying, the duo rammed the vehicle through the barrier at high speed, crushing the policeman to death.

Following a detailed investigation, police filed a chargesheet and successfully secured the conviction of the accused, the spokesperson added.
