New Delhi: Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu has been appointed to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Athletes’ Commission for the 2026–2029 term, as reported by Olympics.com.

Sindhu, one of India’s most celebrated badminton players, previously served on the Commission from 2017 to 2025 and has been a BWF Integrity Ambassador since 2020.

For the upcoming term, Sindhu will join four other members — An Se-young of South Korea, reigning women’s singles Olympic champion; Jia Yifan of China, one-half of the Paris 2024 Olympic women’s doubles gold medallists; Doha Hany of Egypt; and Debora Jille of the Netherlands. All five nominees were confirmed automatically as they were the only candidates put forward.

While Sindhu returns for her third term, both An Se-young and Jia Yifan are first-time appointees.

“Pusarla (PV Sindhu) is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment where every athlete—regardless of background or career stage—feels supported, respected, and empowered to thrive,” said the BWF in a statement quoted by Olympics.com.

The BWF Athletes’ Commission plays a key role in representing players’ voices at the highest level, acting as an advisory body to the BWF Council on matters such as player welfare, tournament regulations, integrity, and the overall competitive landscape.

In the coming weeks, the Commission will elect its Chair and Deputy Chair. Once approved, the Chair will secure a voting seat on the BWF Council, further strengthening athlete representation in global badminton governance.

Welcoming the new members, BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul said:

“Athletes are the heart of our sport, and their voices must be central to every decision we make. The Athletes’ Commission ensures that our global badminton community is shaped by those who live and breathe the game. We congratulate the new members and look forward to their contributions in shaping the future of badminton.”
