New Delhi, December 1 — The Government of India announced that 12 fake universities, which were illegally operating across the country, have been shut down since 2014. Officials said the action was taken to safeguard students from fraudulent institutions and ensure compliance with higher education standards.

According to the Ministry of Education, these universities were found to be functioning without recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and were misleading students with unapproved courses and degrees. The closures were carried out following investigations and legal proceedings.

Authorities emphasised that the government remains committed to protecting the interests of students and strengthening regulatory mechanisms in higher education. The UGC has also issued advisories urging students to verify the authenticity of institutions before seeking admission.

Officials added that strict monitoring and enforcement measures will continue to prevent the emergence of such fake universities in the future, ensuring that India’s higher education system remains credible and transparent.
