NEW DELHI: Billionaire Elon Musk-led Starlink will use Aadhaar authentication to verify customers in India before onboarding them, according to an official statement on Wednesday.
The government has approved Starlink to begin offering satellite-based broadband services in the country.
“The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has onboarded Starlink Satellite Communication Pvt Ltd as a service provider. Starlink will use Aadhaar authentication for customer verification, ensuring the process is smooth, secure, and simple,” the statement said.
At present, Starlink can onboard an estimated 20 lakh customers in India, officials noted.
“Starlink’s integration with Aadhaar authentication represents a strong collaboration: India’s trusted digital identity combined with advanced global satellite technology. Aadhaar e-KYC will enable seamless user onboarding, ensuring regulatory compliance while delivering high-speed internet to households, businesses, and institutions,” the statement added.
The appointment of Starlink as a sub-authentication and sub-eKYC user agency was formalized in the presence of UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar, UIDAI Deputy Director General Manish Bhardwaj, and Starlink India Director Parnil Urdhwareshe.
Starlink has partnered with Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio to distribute its services in India.
