The United Nations has described the recent verdict against former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as an “important step” toward justice for victims, while simultaneously expressing regret over the imposition of the death penalty in the case.

A UN spokesperson stated that accountability for serious violations is essential for upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for affected communities. The organization noted that the verdict reflects progress in addressing long-standing grievances of victims and their families.

However, the UN reiterated its consistent position opposing the death penalty in all circumstances. It emphasized that capital punishment is incompatible with human rights principles and urged authorities to reconsider its use, even in cases involving grave charges.

The UN further encouraged all parties to respect due process, maintain transparency throughout the legal proceedings, and ensure that justice is delivered in a manner fully aligned with international human rights standards.
