New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said the Narendra Modi government is committed to eliminating narcotics from the country and is taking comprehensive steps to achieve this goal.

Speaking at the Second National Conference of Heads of Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of States and Union Territories, Shah stressed the need to intensify efforts against the drug menace to ensure greater success in the coming days. The event was organised by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set 2047 as the target year for making India a fully developed and secure nation. “To realise this vision, it is essential to free the country from drugs. Our youth are the foundation of this dream, and their determination is key to success,” Shah said.

Highlighting global trends, he pointed out that drug abuse has hindered development in several countries and cautioned that two major drug-supplying regions lie close to India’s borders.

Shah identified three levels of narcotics cartels in India: those operating at entry points, those distributing drugs within states, and small vendors selling through local shops or kiosks. “It is time to strike a decisive blow against all three levels. This can be achieved only if officers intensify their crackdown,” he said.

The minister also oversaw the destruction of seized narcotics worth ₹4,794 crore and released the NCB’s annual report for 2024. He underlined that the government is uniting ANTFs and working closely with agencies like the GST department, state drug controllers, Income Tax authorities, and financial institutions to dismantle drug networks across the country.
