New Delhi: Veteran journalist M. L. Kotru, former Resident Editor of The Statesman and a guiding mentor to generations of journalists, passed away late Thursday night in Gurugram.

Kotru, who was in his nineties, also served as India correspondent for The Sunday Times, London, and contributed extensively to various publications in his home state of Jammu and Kashmir.

An active member of the Press Club of India and the Press Association, he authored The Kashmir Story (1994) and edited Asia ’72: Official Guide.

Expressing their condolences, the Press Club of India said on X, “PCI is deeply saddened by the demise of veteran journalist and former Statesman editor M. L. Kotru. During his nearly six-decade-long career in media, he mentored generations of journalists. His passing is an irreparable loss to journalism. We pay our heartfelt tributes to him.”
