In an explosive claim, retired inspector – Mehiboob Mujawar – who was part of Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), said that he had been asked to apprehend RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in connection with the 2008 Malegaon blast case, in which all seven accused, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lieutenant Colonel Shrikant Prasad Purohit were acquitted on Thursday.

He said that the order was given to him with the intention to establish that there was “saffron terror”, and underlined that there was “no saffron terrorism and everything was fake”.

Mujawar was part of the ATS team that investigated the controversial Malegaon blast that took place on September 29, 2008, killing 6 people and leaving 101 others injured.

Reacting to the acquittal of the accused persons by the NIA court, he claimed that he was asked to “go and catch” Mohan Bhagwat.

“I cannot say what investigation the ATS did then and why…But I was given some confidential orders regarding personalities like Ram Kalsangra, Sandip Dange, Dilip Patidar, and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. All these orders were not such that one could follow them. It was beyond my capacity to apprehend a towering personality like Mohan Bhagwat. As I did not follow the orders, a false case was registered against me and it destroyed my career of 40 years,” news agency PTI quoted him as saying.

He also claimed that the orders were given by Param Bir Singh and “higher authorities”.

“Whatever I said about Mohan Bhagwat or about my investigation was all under the orders of Param Bir Singh and even higher authorities. According to their instructions, I was provided with ten personnel from Maharashtra to assist me. I was given funds from the Service Secret Fund, and the ATS officially issued me a revolver,” he claimed.

Notably, the ATS had initially investigated the case, which was later taken over by the National Investigation Agency.

Who Is Mehiboob Mujawar?

  • Mehiboob Mujawar was a former ATS officer who was a part of the investigation in the Malegaon blast case.
  • He was working as a junior under Parambir Singh, former Mumbai Police Commissioner, who was heading one of the teams of ATS in this case.
  • Mujawar was given instructions by his seniors to arrest Mohan Bhagwat. But, Bhagwat was not the RSS chief then. Bhagwat was appointed as the RSS chief on March 21, 2009.
  • Mujawar has now retired from police service and lives in Solapur.
  • He is also one of the witnesses in the Malegaon blast case.
  • He had testified before the court that ATS led a manipulative investigation in the Malegaon case. He also mentioned before the court that two key accused – Kalsangar and Dange – were bumped off by ATS. Kalsangar and Dange are shown as absconding accused in this case. It was said that the LML bike, which was in the name of Sadhvi, was being used by Kalsangar for 1.5 years.
