New Delhi: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, has approached the Supreme Court seeking his immediate release.
Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) on September 26, two days after protests in Ladakh demanding statehood and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule turned violent, leaving four dead and around 90 injured. He is currently lodged in Jodhpur jail, Rajasthan.
In her petition, filed through advocate Sarvam Ritam Khare, Angmo has challenged the legality of her husband’s detention and questioned the grounds for invoking the NSA against him. She alleged that she has not been provided a copy of the detention order, which violates due process, and has been unable to establish contact with him.
The Ladakh administration, however, recently denied allegations of carrying out a “witch-hunt” or “smokescreen” operation against Wangchuk.
