Srinagar: In a notable enforcement action, the Wildlife Department arrested four individuals on Friday evening in the Shallabugh Wetland Conservation Reserve for attempting to hunt water birds.

According to sources, the operation took place around 6:30 PM on September 5, when a patrolling team from the Shallabugh Range, led by Block Officer Ajaz Ahmad, intercepted two boats in the wetland.

The four accused were apprehended and are now in departmental custody. The team also seized the boats, along with hunted birds, live cartridges, and spent ammunition.

The operation, carried out under near-dark conditions, highlighted the courage and determination of the field staff, who ensured the offenders could not escape.

Deputy Conservator of Forests (Wildlife Wetlands Kashmir), Altaf Hussain, confirmed the arrests and praised the staff, noting that the late-hour operation underscored the department’s strong commitment to protecting Kashmir’s wetlands.

He added that patrols have been intensified during mornings and evenings, especially with the migratory bird season approaching. “Anyone attempting to hunt migratory birds will face strict action under the Wildlife Protection Act,” he warned.

This latest success follows a previous operation earlier this year, in which four individuals were booked for hunting in Wular Lake.

The Shallabugh Wetland, a Ramsar site of international importance, remains a top conservation priority, with enhanced patrolling and community vigilance aimed at safeguarding habitats for both migratory and resident bird species.
