Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team for clinching their maiden ICC World Cup title, praising their courage and determination.
The Indian women’s team defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the final at Navi Mumbai on Sunday, marking a historic first World Cup win and adding a glorious chapter to India’s sporting legacy.
“Congratulations to them. It’s a proud moment for the entire country,” Abdullah, an avid cricket enthusiast, told reporters at the Civil Secretariat.
He noted that few had expected India to go all the way when the tournament began, but the players displayed exceptional grit and composure throughout. “They played with a lot of courage and won some very tough matches—especially the semi-final against Australia, where chasing such a big total was no easy feat,” he said.
Abdullah also lauded the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for implementing pay parity between the men’s and women’s teams, calling it a key step in boosting morale and performance. “Earlier, there used to be a big gap in salaries, but now that has changed. I believe this team will be very hard to beat,” he added.
Meanwhile, celebrations erupted across Jammu as fans set off firecrackers and raised slogans to mark India’s World Cup triumph.
