Tianjin: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to view India-China relations from a “strategic” and “long-term perspective” during their meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit being held here.

“Both sides need to approach and handle our relationship from strategic heights and a long-term perspective to ensure the sustained, stable, and healthy growth of our bilateral ties,” Xi said.

In a veiled reference to US President Donald Trump’s unilateral trade policies, Xi stressed that India and China should work together to uphold multilateralism. He further called on both nations to contribute to building a multipolar world and advancing democracy in global governance.

“We must shoulder our historic responsibility to safeguard multilateralism, promote a multipolar world, enhance democracy in international relations, and make due contributions to peace and prosperity in Asia and beyond,” Xi added.

This was the first meeting between Modi and Xi in nearly ten months and came at a time when India-US relations have strained due to Washington’s trade and tariff measures.
