Mumbai: Equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty ended slightly higher during the special one-hour Muhurat trading session on Tuesday, ushering in Samvat Year 2082 on a positive note amid upbeat global market trends.
The 30-share BSE Sensex rose 62.97 points, or 0.07%, to close at 84,426.34 after hitting an intraday high of 84,665.44 and a low of 84,286.40. The broader NSE Nifty advanced 25.45 points, or 0.10%, to end at 25,868.60. Out of the 50 Nifty components, 25 ended in the red, 24 gained, and one remained unchanged.
Both the BSE and NSE held the symbolic Muhurat trading session from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM, marking the start of the new Samvat year and the opening of fresh accounting books for traders and investors.
In the previous Samvat 2081, which concluded on Monday, the Sensex gained 4,974.31 points (6.26%), while the Nifty rose 1,637.8 points (6.76%).
Among the Sensex gainers, Bajaj Finserv topped the list, rising 1.42%, followed by Axis Bank (0.80%), Infosys (0.72%), Mahindra & Mahindra (0.60%), Tata Motors (0.55%), Bajaj Finance (0.53%), and Tata Steel (0.52%).
On the losing side were Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank, HCL Technologies, Bharti Airtel, Maruti Suzuki India, Trent Ltd, and Tata Consultancy Services.
In the broader market, the BSE Midcap index rose 0.23% (106.95 points) to 46,787.20, while the BSE SmallCap advanced 0.91% (486.81 points) to 53,842.85.
Among sectoral indices, Industrials led the gains with a 0.53% rise, followed by Telecommunication (0.51%), Commodities (0.47%), Capital Goods (0.40%), Services (0.38%), and Metal (0.37%). Bankex and Realty indices ended marginally lower.
Global cues remained supportive, with European stocks trading higher and Asian markets closing in the green. Shanghai Composite climbed 1.36%, Hang Seng gained 0.77%, Kospi added 0.24%, and Nikkei 225 rose 0.15%.
According to exchange data, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) bought equities worth ₹790.45 crore on Monday, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) made larger purchases worth ₹2,485.46 crore.
On Monday, ahead of the Muhurat session, the Sensex had jumped 411.18 points to 84,363.37, and the Nifty had advanced 133.30 points to 25,843.15.
