SRINAGAR: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday staged a protest in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly over National Conference (NC) MLA Bashir Ahmad Veeri’s remark describing the BJP as a “communal party.”
While paying tributes to former BJP MLC Ramesh Arora, Veeri acknowledged Arora’s contributions and praised him for having a “secular mindset” despite his association with what he termed a “communal party.”
His remarks immediately drew strong objections from BJP legislators, who rose from their seats and protested in the House, demanding action against the NC member. BJP leader Sham Lal Sharma said such comments were inappropriate during obituary references, which are meant to express respect for the deceased.
Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather intervened and urged all legislators to avoid making controversial statements during obituary references.
