Jammu: Police on Saturday conducted two route marches as part of heightened security measures ahead of next month’s bypolls in the Nagrota Assembly constituency near Jammu.

According to officials, the marches-cum-briefings involved police and paramilitary personnel deployed for election duties in the rural zone of Jammu district. They were held under the jurisdictions of Jhajjar Kotli and Nagrota police stations and supervised by Jammu Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Joginder Singh.

A police spokesperson said that personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and local police took part in the exercise. The route marches are part of standard security drills aimed at ensuring safety and maintaining order during elections.

“These exercises help security personnel familiarise themselves with the area, improve preparedness to tackle any potential law and order situation, and strengthen intelligence gathering,” the spokesperson said.

He added that the visible presence of security forces serves as a deterrent to anti-social elements, boosts public confidence, and encourages greater voter participation. The marches also enhance coordination and teamwork between different security agencies.

“They serve as a reminder of the importance of peace and security during elections, ensuring a free, fair and peaceful voting process in line with the democratic values of the nation,” the spokesperson added.

Bypolls for the Nagrota constituency in Jammu and the Budgam segment in Kashmir are scheduled for November 11. The Nagrota seat fell vacant following the death of BJP legislator Devender Singh Rana on October 31 last year, while the Budgam seat was vacated after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah retained his Ganderbal seat, his family stronghold, after winning two constituencies.
