Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir Police has registered 1,342 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act till September this year, of which 1,305 have been challaned, resulting in 142 convictions and 197 acquittals, officials said on Wednesday.
On the financial front, the police have conducted 67 investigations, leading to the attachment of 81 properties worth ₹16.64 crore as part of the ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking and peddling in the Union Territory.
“Up to September 2025, 1,342 NDPS cases were registered, out of which 1,305 were challaned. These resulted in 142 convictions, 197 acquittals, and the completion of 339 trials, including 12 high-conviction cases,” said Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Crime, Sujit K Singh.
Providing further details, Singh said 215 detentions were made under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in NDPS Act (PITNDPS). The police identified 222 drug hotspots, demolished 44 of them, and placed 1,350 individuals under active surveillance.
To strengthen monitoring, 983 CCTV cameras have been installed across both divisions of J&K, while only 71 Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) cases remained pending as of October 6. “We have also established 103 backward and forward linkages, leading to the arrest of 113 accused persons,” the ADGP added.
He further noted that 107 trials in absentia are nearing completion, which will allow authorities to declare absconding offenders as proclaimed.
Singh highlighted that nearly 99 per cent of retail pharmacies in J&K have implemented computerised billing and CCTV surveillance systems, enhancing traceability and oversight.
Officials added that awareness and training programmes are being conducted for teachers, self-help groups, and frontline workers as part of the broader anti-drug initiative.
Since January, over 32,000 patients have sought OPD services, while 551 new admissions have been recorded at drug de-addiction centres across the Union Territory.
