Five Suspected Bangladeshi Nationals Detained in Shillong

Shillong: Five suspected Bangladeshi nationals were arrested in Shillong for travelling without valid documents, police said on Tuesday.

The arrests were made on Monday during a joint operation by the Mawlai Police and the Special Operations Team (SOT) at the ISBT junction in Mawlai Mawiong.

Police identified the arrested individuals as Md Fajid Bilul (47), Lelepa Begum (40), Musamat Jahana Khatoon (35), Md Alamgir Mia (25), and Md Imammul Hassan (18).

According to officials, the group was reportedly en route to Bangladesh via Shillong after arriving from Srinagar, but none possessed valid travel documents or passports.

Based on a tip-off, police intercepted a tourist taxi carrying the five suspects during a checking operation at the ISBT junction.

Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem said a criminal case has been registered at Mawlai Police Station, and further investigation is underway.

The accused were produced before a local court on Monday, which remanded them to 14 days of judicial custody, he added.
