Minister Sakeena Itoo Reviews Medical Facilities Across Srinagar
Takes stock of medical supplies and essential services; engages with patients and staff
SRINAGAR: In the wake of heavy rainfall, Health and Medical Education Minister Sakeena Itoo today visited key healthcare institutions in Srinagar to assess the availability of medical supplies and essential facilities for the public.
The Minister began her tour at Lal Ded Hospital, where she conducted a detailed inspection of emergency services, OPD, maternity and child care units, diagnostic labs, and the pharmacy. She reviewed the functionality of medical equipment, availability of essential medicines, cleanliness, and staff attendance.



During the visit, Minister Itoo interacted directly with patients and their attendants, gathering firsthand feedback on hospital services. She assured that any gaps in healthcare delivery would be addressed promptly. Speaking to doctors and paramedical staff, she stressed the importance of vigilance and responsiveness, especially during adverse weather. She also instructed the administration to ensure round-the-clock availability of doctors and proper maintenance of duty rosters. “Health is a priority sector for this Government, and we are committed to creating a healthcare system that is efficient, compassionate, and accountable to the people of J&K,” she said.
The Minister then visited the Bone and Joint Hospital, Barzulla, inspecting OPD, IPD, emergency wards, diagnostic labs, and other facilities. She urged hospital authorities to ensure timely treatment for patients and to make arrangements for patient attendants who may face difficulties due to ongoing rains.
Next, she visited the 500-bedded Paediatric Hospital, Bemina, where she reviewed emergency services, the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and diagnostic facilities. She interacted with doctors, paramedical staff, and attendants to understand challenges in pediatric healthcare. Emphasizing sanitation, hygiene, and patient-friendly services, she instructed hospital authorities to address grievances regarding accommodation, waiting areas, and essential drug availability as a priority.
Later, the Minister toured SMHS Hospital and GMC Srinagar, reviewing OPD, IPD, emergency wards, OTs, and other key sections. She directed officers to strengthen medical facilities and supplies in light of the adverse weather. At SMHS, she convened a meeting with the Principal of GMC Srinagar, Administrator of Associated Hospitals, Medical Superintendent SMHS, HoDs, and other senior medical staff, highlighting the importance of patient-doctor relationships in building a healthy society.
Minister Itoo emphasized that the Government, led by Omar Abdullah, is committed to improving service delivery across Jammu and Kashmir, with particular focus on rural and underserved areas. She said her visits are aimed at eliminating complacency and fostering a culture of excellence in public healthcare.
Additionally, she instructed the Assistant Drug Controller to take samples of all medicines and essential supplies at these hospitals to ensure quality and safety for patients.
