Gold Coast: Former Australian batting star Shane Watson lauded India opener Shubman Gill, calling him a “ridiculously talented” batter with exceptional technique and the potential to adapt quickly across formats.
Watson praised Gill’s consistency but acknowledged the challenges of transitioning between formats, something the young opener is currently navigating. Since his return to T20Is in September 2025, Gill has scored 170 runs in 10 innings at an average of 24.14 and a strike rate of 148.24 — numbers that reflect promise but also inconsistency.
On the ongoing tour of Australia, the right-hander has managed scores of 37 not out, 5, and 15 in the first three games of the five-match T20I series.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Watson emphasized the mental and technical adjustments required when switching between formats.
“It definitely is a challenge,” he said. “The more you do it, the better you understand the small adjustments needed — in technique, game plan, and mindset — to bring out the best version of yourself every time.”
The upcoming fourth T20I will mark a special occasion — the first-ever international match between India and Australia at the Carrara Oval (formerly the People’s First Stadium) in Gold Coast.
Watson expressed his excitement about the venue hosting a high-profile clash, saying,
“It’s an amazing opportunity for the Gold Coast to showcase its incredible beauty. For the Indian team to play here, and for the community to host a game of this calibre, is very special. I’m sure both players and fans will thoroughly enjoy the experience.”
